10 Things to Know About the LGBT Community

1. Being gay is not a choice. In the US, we are almost evenly divided on the question of choice: “Are people born gay?” (42%) vs. “Do they choose to be gay?”(44%). For the most part, how we answer this will dictate related views about inclusion in the church and civil rights for gay, lesbian and bisexual people. When individuals hold the “born gay” option as true, it is more probable that they are also supportive about extending equality to the gay, lesbian and bisexual people.

2. The age most are aware of their sexuality is 12.

3. The average age those of the LGBT community will tell someone else is 17-- or 5 years after knowing themselves.

4. There are more than 9 million people in the LGBT community in the United States alone. Half of them identify as bisexual.

5. Only 28% of those who are bisexual say all the important people in their life know, compared to 77% of gay men, and 71% of lesbians.

6. Approximately 25% of bisexual men, 30% of bisexual females live in poverty compared to 15% and 20% of non-LGB men and women.

7. Nearly half of those who are bisexual say they have not came out to their coworkers.

8. Those who are bisexual are three times more likey to come encounter with police voilence than those who are non-bisexual.

9. 20% of bisexuals note a negative employment experience, and 60% say they have heard anti-bisexual jokes on the job.

10. Those who are bisexual experience higher rates of sexual and intimate partner violence than gay, lesbian, and straight people.
