What is Queer Theory?

Queer theory is a field of post structralist critical theory that emerged in the early 1990's out of the fields of Queer and woman's studies.

Queer Theory evolved from activist thinkers during the early 1990s. It began the basis of sexuality and gender. This is a building block of both the theory of being queer, and understanding it better. Before Queer Theory, being homosexual, transgender, etc was not understood and wrong. This theory brought light and knowledge to the community. Still, it was thought of as a deviant act although, now people know what that act really entails. Queer Theory mostly focuses on bisexual, gay, and lesbian suspects as a framework but lately branched out to cross-dressers and transgender suspects. (1)

In 1970, the feminist movement brought about a lot of change and gave a voice to those who wanted to be heard. During this time people came up with the idea of gender roles.. Boys are messy and have no feelings while girls are delicate and full of emotion. But as we all know, this wasn't always the case. Queer theorists began to get upset with these roles because who the person is doesn't depend on their parts! Some are born with both, NOW WHAT? (yes, it's true.. they call that intersex) What the people need to understand is, gender roles depend on the mainstream of that time. Men used to have long ponytails and wear skirts. While women had pixie haircuts. Your genetilia doesn't effect what you are supposed to be.. at least according to Queer theorists.

Queer theorists are always trying to get one point across: What you think you know has a lot more going on than you think.
